Carol ramenait de France des dessins de la classe de son fils de 10 ans pour celle d'Amna (meme age). La visite dans la classe d'Amna vu un reel moment d'echange et de memoire.Rizal commenca par parler de sa fille mais surtour de ce qu'elle avait de son vivant cree: des liens et une amitie infaillible entre des gens de pays, de culture et de religion differentes. Que le respect et l'entraide avait marque le coeur de tout ceux qui avait eu un lien avec les efforts pour aider Amna. Emily et Carol ont ensuite aussi parler, disant aux enfants presents leurs joies d'etre la, et le courage qu'Amna avait eu tout au long de son combat contre la leucemie. Les amies d'Amna etaient extremement emus, mais aussi tres heureux de recevoir des dessins de France. La classe d'Amna avait elle aussi prepare un cahier de dessins a remettre a la classe francaise. A la fin, nous avons eu droit a une belle chanson, et le salut traditionnel de la part de tout les eleves.

Rizal started by talking about his daughter but also about the miracle she had achieved being alive: creating ties and friendship between people from different cultures, countries and religion. And that these ties had touched all who worked and contributed to help Amna fight against cancer. Amna's friends were all very moved, and very happy to receive the drawings from France. They had also prepared a book of drawings to be brought back to France through Carol. At the end, they sang a traditional Acehnese song for us, and we parted all very happy to have had this moment.

Chers amis,

Un an apres qu'Amna nous ait quittee, Carol a atterit en Aceh pour une visite de quelques jours. Au programme, rencontrer les Junaedi et Erwin et intervenir dans la classe d'Amna.
Montrer aussi que meme un an apres, les liens et l'amitie crees en France avec Carol et l'association"Ensemble Contre la Leucemie" existent toujours.

One year day-to-day after Amna left us, Carol arrived in Banda Aceh for a short but meaningful visit. She met the Junaedi and Erwin and also visited Amna's School and class, showing that even one year later, the ties and friendship between all those who had helped Amna in France are still very much alive.

Bonjour à tous,

Aujourd'hui était la cérémonie chez les Junaedi marquant les 10 jours après le décès d'Amna (tradition musulmane acehnaise). Nous sommes donc allés manger chez eux ce midi avec tout leurs autres amis/famille. Il y avait beaucoup moins de monde qu'à l'enterrement mais quand même la maison était remplie. Nous avons amené du café, du thé et du sucre, comme le veux la tradition.
Lorsque nous sommes arrivés les hommes étaient tous dehors alors les garçons sont restés avec eux tandis que moi Célina et Adèle (de l'ONG d'Abel) sommes entrées. C'était très émouvant. Tout les enfants de la classe d'Amna était là assis en rond, en train de réciter des prières avec leur maitresse. Ils les chantaient et c'était vraiment beau. Cela a duré bien 15 minutes ce qui m'a permis de dégager ma tristesse à travers ces chants. Elly était là, bien sur, et c'était comme si cette puissance et leur foi nous avaient ramené notre petite Amna là, dans le salon. On la sentait parmi nous. Moment très spirituel.
Puis les enfants sont partis, après avoir faire la queue pour saluer Elly qui les embrassait tous sur le front. Il ne restait plus que les amis proches. Nous avons mangé. J'ai attrapé Latifah et lui ai fait plein de guilis (sans initer d'hurlements féroces, ce qui est assez exceptionnel!). Rizal est venu s'assoeir à côté de moi avec en main l'album que nous avons fait à Amna à Noël. Ils ont rajoutés des photos, dont les dernières d'Amna en avril: elle et Putri faisait les belles devant la caméra et on dirait un vrai défilé de mode. Je vais les faire tirer pour pouvoir les partager avec vous: elles sont vraiment belles. Je leur avais aussi préparer deux cd avec toutes les photos et vidéos que j'avais d'Amna et de la famille et de nous sur mon ordinateur.
Nous sommes restés environ une heure et demi mais ça faisait du bien d'être dans la maison avec tout le monde un brin apaisé. Nous retournerons les voir bientôt avec la traduction de tout vos mots de soutien et inch allah certaines de vos lettres qui arriveront bientôt.

I just wanted to let all of you who have financially contributed in
helping the family know, that all funds who have not yet been used
will be given to the family. We had talked about this before and had
said that it would go for Amna's three sister's education. We entirely
trust the family to decide what's best.
I'm sorry but we will not be able to provide you with explanation on
how the money was used, as we will stop asking the family to give us

Dernier voyage d'Amna...

Merci pour tous vos messages de soutien. Je tiens à vous raconter en détails les dernières 24h, car je sais à quel point c’est important de savoir comment cela s’est passé.. Donc voici une dernière petite histoire du dernier petit voyage d’Amna.
Nous avons appris la nouvelle le vendredi soir vers 10h. Amna est partie vers 9h à la suite d’une hémorragie cérébrale. Nous avions en effet reçu en fin d’après-midi un texto d’Erwin nous disant qu’Amna « saignait de la tête », ce qui bien entendu ne nous semblait pas très positif. Mais ce fut un gros gros choc tout de même. Rizal a eu l’énorme gentillesse de nous appeler personnellement alors qu’il savait que nous savions déjà. Il nous a tout simplement dit « Amna has left our family ».
Abel est moi étions en fait à Medan, escale obligatoire entre Penang et Banda Aceh. Cela tombait très bien car cela nous a permis d’être là avec la famille hier. Rizal est arrivé de Banda Aceh vers midi et nous étions là pour l’accueillir. Il a fait le voyage avec son beau-frère. Bien entendu les retrouvailles étaient très émotionnelles : comment réagir face à un papa qui vient de perdre son enfant ? Elly est arrivée de Penang peu de temps après. Je crois qu’elle était enfin soulagée de retrouver son mari et de ne plus être seule. C’était très dur de voir Elly et Rizal se retrouver, complètement anéanti par la tristesse. Elly nous est tombée dans les bras en sanglots et ce fut bien de pouvoir se serrer fort.
Il a fallu ensuite gérer le transport du corps d’Amna car la compagnie aérienne changeait et bien sur rien ici n’est automatique. Rizal est donc allé s’occuper de tout ça pendant que nous attendions avec la maman. Elle allait mieux et nous a raconté qu’Amna avait beaucoup aimé le livre que nous lui avions fait et qu’elle avait reçu le samedi, et qu’elle avait lu tous les messages de soutien de tout le monde.
Puis la famille proche et éloignée qui habite à Medan est venu à l’aéroport : la tante d’Elly, des cousines, etc… C’était chouette pour Elly de pouvoir être consolée par ces femmes vu qu’ici ce sont les femmes qui vont apporter aux femmes le plus de réconfort.
Nous sommes ensuite allé manger et là nous avons parlé d’Amna, de son dernier jour. Elle aurait demandé au docteur de lui dire honnêtement quel était son état et il lui avait répondu honnêtement qu’elle était dans un état critique. Elly nous a dit qu’ensuite Amna avait réfléchi pendant longtemps…Et qu’avant d’avoir son hémorragie Amna était dans la salle de jeu en train de jouer avec les autres enfants et que tout allait bien. Rizal nous avait aussi dit il y a une semaine lorsqu’elle n’allait pas bien qu’ils s’étaient préparés à sa mort et qu’elle même ne réagissait plus, comme si cela n’avait plus d’importance. J’ose penser qu’elle était sereine et qu’elle n’avait pas si peur que ça.
A l’aéroport, Rizal nous a dit deux fois que nous avions fait tout ce que nous pouvions, que nous avions donné notre cœur et notre force mais que maintenant Amna était protégée d’Allah et qu’elle était donc en sûreté et qu’il ne fallait plus s’inquiéter. Que ce qui avait emporté Amna dépassait nos efforts sur terre et que ce n’était plus de notre ressort. Les parents ont été formidables et nous avions vraiment l’impression de faire partie de cette grande famille. C’était un honneur d’être là avec eux hier.
Nous avons tous pris l’avion à 5 h pour retourner à Banda Aceh. Pour les musulmans, le corps doit être enterré le plus rapidement possible (dans les deux jours suivant le décès). Tout allait donc s’enchaîner très vite. De l’aéroport de Banda nous sommes allés directement chez la famille. Il y avait déjà énormément de gens : tout les voisins, la communauté, la famille proche et éloignée, les amis, etc…Nous avons rejoint Erwin et sa femme Ika, Célina et Damien. Le corps d’Amna est arrivé peu de temps après. La tradition veut que le mort soit reposé une dernière fois dans sa maison. Amna a donc été allongée dans le salon, enveloppée dans du tissu blanc. On ne voyait que son visage, et elle était magnifique. Tout le monde est entré dire au revoir, et est ressorti. Personnellement j’avais un peu peur de ce moment mais Rizal est venu nous chercher et nous a dit qu’on pouvait aller la voir et donc on y est allé, et en fait c’était très « beau » au sens ou il y avait une proximité entre nous tous et elle (pas de distance bizarre comme nous pouvons en avoir chez nous avec la mort). La famille était assise à côté d’elle. C’était très dur pour Putri, sa grande sœur ; Huzna je crois ne se rendait pas vraiment compte au début ; et Latifah dormait. Le visage d’Amna a ensuite été recouvert d’un tissu blanc, puis le corps en entier d’un nouveau tissu blanc brodé avec des fils d’or, et les hommes sont partis avec le corps à la mosquée prier. Les hommes sont ensuite allé directement de la mosquée au cimetière mettre le corps en terre. Deux batons sont plantés de chaque côté de la tombe pour que des arbres poussent. Il y a eu des chants et de la prière.
Moi je suis restée à la maison avec toutes les autres femmes. Nous étions autour d’Elly et des filles, et nous papotions, nous avons mangé. Les Acehnaises ont une manière tellement digne de gérer la souffrance, je ne sais pas trop comment expliquer, mais toutes ces femmes là étaient tellement fortes et amenaient tellement de soutien à Elly, c’était assez formidable.
Puis Erwin et Abel sont rentrés, et nous sommes allés dire au revoir. Elly nous a demandé de revenir même si il n’y avait pas Amna, ce que nous ferons bien sur.

Voilà… Journée intense en émotions. Je n’arrive toujours pas à réaliser qu’Amna est partie.. mais il faut du temps pour ce genre de chose.
En tous les cas, j’ai bien transmis vos pensées à Elly et Rizal, et ils savent combien vous pensez à eux. Ils m’ont demandé si tous leurs amis français étaient au courant, etc..

Amna's last trip

Dear Family and friends,

After an intense week end, here is a little mail to share with you Amna’s last trip home.
We met Rizal yesterday at noon in Medan Airport where he flew in from Banda Aceh. He had gone home from Penang two days earlier. He came with his brother-in-law: it was hard but we were very happy to see him and help him. Elly arrived from Penang with Amna’s body not long after. She was relieved to finally be with her husband and no longer alone. It was very hard seeing them reunite as you can imagine. Elly came to both Abel and I and fell in our arms. It was difficult for her to walk at first but Rizal was holding her tight.
Rizal had to go and organize Amna’s transfer from one company to the other. Off course, here, nothing is automatic or easy, even in such situation. We stayed with Elly who told us about Amna’s last day and also that she had loved her book we made her with all your messages of love and support.
Some family of Elly living in Medan came to the airport and it was good because Elly was capable of receiving their support (women here are the biggest source of support for other women. A part of course from Rizal, it is hard for other men to be “physically” supportive). We then went and had food, and talked about Amna. She had asked the doctor in the morning to tell her honestly what her condition was. He had told her it was critical, and she had thought about it a lot, and then had gone to play in the play room with other children. She then had her hemorragy.
We took the plane back to Banda Aceh at 5 all together in the same plane. Once arrived, there was an ambulance there for Amna. We went directly to their house where there was already many people (the community, friends, family.. ). We met Erwin and Ika there. Amna’s body arrived shortly after and she was brought into the living room and laid on the ground (there is no “coffin” here, just a wooden box for the journey). She was wrapped in white lining and was very beautiful. Everybody came in the house and said goodbye. The family was sitting next to her on the floor. We stayed quite a while, I couldn’t stop looking at her, trying to say goodbye and also not wanting to forget her face. It was very hard for Putri, her older sister; Huzna I think wasn’t too sure of what was going on, and Latifah was sleeping.. Then they put a white cloth on her face and wrapped her in a white and golden cloth. The men then went to the mosque with her body to pray for her soul. Then they went directly from the mosque to the cemetery, where she was buried. There were songs and prayers, and two trees were planted on both sides of her grave. I stayed in the house with all the women. We talked, ate, and took care of Elly and the girls. Then Abel and Erwin came back, we left.
In Medan, Rizal told me that we had done everything we could, and that now we needn’t worry for Amna was in peace with Allah. He told us that what had taken her was bigger than our powers and that we shouldn’t worry for her anymore. He also thanked us and all of you for everything. I envy their faith.
We will miss our little angel. Rizal and Elly are family now so we will continue off course to see them and give you news. The money that is left will go for Amna’s sisters, to pay for school or their future education. We trust the family entirely to decide what’s best.

Amna nous a quitte vendredi soir a 9 heure indonesienne... Elle a eu une hemorragie cerebrale et est partie ce soir au cote de sa maman.
Nous sommes a Medan avec Abel "par chance" et allons etre la pour la famille pour aider a rapatrier le corps d Amna a Banda Aceh.
Au nome d Amna qui a eu le temps de lire tout vos message de soutien il y a quelques jours, et au nom de la famille, merci pour votre soutien et votre aide.

A little angel has left us...

Amna left us friday night at 9 pm indonesian time. She had a cerebral hemoragy and passed away with her mum at her side.
These are very sad times but we are happy to know Amna has finally found peace.

Hello all,

Yesterday we were told Amna had pain in her stomach and needed to be operated of her appendicite. Apparently, this morning, Amna is not feeling any more pain and wil not be operated.
We have established contact with the French Embassy in KL and they have referred us to their "official" malaisian doctor, who we are contacting today to see if he can help us. We need to have complete and precise information on Amna's condition to start any procedures bringing her to France. And the malaysian doctor in Penang who is treating her has not been able to communicate clearly with us on this.
We are happy for now the operation was upheld because operating in her state might have been very dangerous.
Thanks so much to all of you who have been supportive, financialy and emotionaly. You can still send us messages of support or little stories for Amna until friday night for us. We will be getting them to her on saturday through a friend who is travelling to Penang to renew his visa.

Hier on nous a dit qu'Amna avait une crise d'appendicite et allait devoir être opérée hier soir. Ce matin par contre Rizal vient de nous annoncer que l'opération n'a pas eu lieu, et qu'Amna n'a plus mal...
Nous avons établi contact avec l'Ambassade de Kuala Lumpur et ils nous ont transmis le contact de leur médecin réferrent. Nous allons le contacter aujourd'hui et voir s'il peut nous aider. Nous avons besoin de quelqu'un pour confimer l'état précis d'Amna niveau médical vu que nous n'arrivons pas à communiquer avec son médecin traitant à Penang.
Nous sommes contents que l'opération a été annulée car opérer Amna maintenant pourrait être très dangereux pour elle.
Merci a vous tous pour votre soutien financier mais aussi émotionnel: vos messages sont géniaux, et nous les lui transmettront samedi. Pour ceux qui n'ont pas encore envoyé, vous pouvez jusqu'à vendredi soir pour nous. Un ami part à Penang samedi pour renouveller son visa et nous lui transmettrons par ce biais.

Wednesday the 23rd, UPDATE

Dear all,

Amna and Rizal are still in Penang. Amna has not been able to eat for the last two days and was complaining about stomach pain. Turns out it is most likely her appendicite. They are scanning her today and might be operating her soon. She is not transportable this week so it looks like it's going to be hard to bring her to Singapore for a checkup.
Her doctor in Penang has specified that she will need a doctor to accompany her if she takes the plane (for Singapore and/or France).

IF YOU KNOW OF ANY DOCTOR WHO IS QUALIFIED AND FREE: PARENTS, FRIENDS, ETC...
It's always good to have options.

Our work colleague is going to Penang for his visa on saturday and we will be giving him a gift and letter for Amna. If you guys want to send me messages of support for her we will translate them and give them to her also. I think it would be great to do that.

1. Préparer les demandes de visa pour Amna et un de ses parents
2. Chercher des fonds que nous n'aurons peut-être pas à utiliser
3. Cherche et contactez toutes personnes qui pourrait aider si Amna venait en France.
4. Trouver en avance d'éventuels traducteurs indo-anglais-français

Letter I have been sending around

Dear family and friends,

As most of you know, Abel and I have been helping a little girl called Amna that has leukemia since September. We managed to find funds for all her medical costs since September, as well as building a strong support network in France, England and the USA. We also managed to find support for an eventual coming of Amna to France for her bone marrow transplant. The ex-French President himself committed to helping us bring Amna to France for her transplant. We have several organizations in France providing us with financial and emotional support (Together against Leukemia is one of them), as well as recognized doctors willing to help Amna.

Around two months ago, Amna was at her best and the doctors in Penang, Malaysia, where she's been treated, told us that she had managed to battle the disease. Even our French leukemia specialist who was helping us said Amna might not need a transplant after all.

Unfortunately, Amna had to be rushed back to Penang on Saturday because she was not feeling well. We learned yesterday morning that Amna has two months to live if she is not transplanted. We are "re-activating" all our networks in France and are hoping we will be able to organize this quickly enough.

We need money to
1. finance her trip to Singapore to undergo full check up by a doctor
linked to our doctor in France.
2. finance an eventual trip to France even though our friends and
family will host the family (Amna and one parent) and provide them
with food
2. In the worst case, finance Amna's family's trips to Penang in the
coming two months.

That is why we are asking you for a big favor: help us mobilize people around Amna. I know it is always delicate to ask money to people, but if we can all sensitize a few friends and collegues around us and raise a few funds, we can do a lot to help Amna. If each one of us gives a little, it makes a big difference.

I have many pictures and reports about Amna I could forward. As we are in an emergency, I have not taken the time to print or send them. WHO IS DOING WHAT

Right now:

1. People in France are trying to contact the French President and tha ministries that were involved in Jacques Chirac's committment to Amna two months ago.
2. We are trying to raise money in France and Aceh. If you have any ideas, please contact me emilyfrancoise@gmail.com

I have just talked to Amna's doctor in Penang. We have until wednesday morning to try and get a commitment and action from the doctors, Air France, and other partners that had already said they would help.

3. I am organising in advance all the visa documents needed. If any of you have contacts at the French embassy or consulate, please share them!

Amna's Health Worsens...

Dear All,

I come with bad news from Penang. Amna had to be rushed back to Penang on Saturday, where the doctors found her in very bad shape. The Penang doctor even had to call Kuala Lumpur for Medical advice.

The doctors told Rizal Amna had two months to live. This comes as a big blow after we thought Amna had managed to battle the disease and wouldn't need a bone marrow transplant.

BUt now she does, and we have VERY LITTLE time to act. I am contacting all our network in France and trying to organize her coming to France. As a reminder, we ALREADY HAVE A DONOR for Amna in France.

We have to call the doctor in Penang and give an official answer on wednesday morning.
Amna can not get a last chemo without it being followed by the transplant, as her body would not handle another chemo. And if she doesn't get a chemo and a transplant, she will not survive.

I will write more with news.

Avril à Banda Aceh

Bonjour à tous!

Voici les dernières nouvelles d'Amna... elle va TRES bien. Elle revient d'un check-up de 48 heures à Penang. Il devait durer plus longtemps mais devant sa bonne santé les médecins l'ont renvoyé chez elle!
Elle continue d'aller à l'école et ses cheveux repoussent très rapidement.

Grande nouvelle que je veux partager avec vous: Amna n'aura pas besoin de greffe de la moelle osseuse pour l'instant. Des médecins français ont regarder son dossier médical et conclu qu'elle avait réussi à combattre la maladie. Il y a toujours des chances de rechutes à l'avenir, mais pour l'instant, elle a réussi à écarter le danger! La famille est extrèmement heureuse. Nous sommes en train de voir si une dernière chimio est nécessaire, soit en France, soit à Singapore.

Je vous donnerai plus de nouvelles très bientôt. Un grand merci à vous tous.

Chers amis,

Excusez ce long silence: nous étions rentrés en France pour nos vacances et sommes de retour à Banda Aceh depuis deux semaines.
Les nouvelles d'Amna sont les suivantes:
- depuis maintenant plusieurs semaines Amna va beaucoup mieux physiquement du moins, et va même régulièrement à l'école ce qui lui boost énormément son moral. Ses cheveux ont repoussé et on sent qu'elle est beaucoup plus à l'aise avec la situation que pendant les derniers mois. Elle sait aussi que rien n'est fini mais elle me semble vraiment paisible.
- Amna a toujours son infection au foi. Nous avions acheté grâce à vos dons des médicaments très chers qui étaient sensés mieux la guérir. Ils lui ont fait beaucoup de bien mais n'ont pas détruits l'infection. Amna est retourné à Penang il y a une semaine pour de nouveaux tests. Elle a ramené ses radios du foi que nous avons envoyé directement au docteur Valérie Lapierre qui nous aide avec Amna. Nous attendons des commentaires!

Nous commençons ici à privilégier une venue d'Amna en France pour faire guérir son infection ET pour la greffe de la moelle osseuse. En effet, les médecins de Penang n'ont rien réussi en trois mois d'infection... je pense que les soins seront plus efficaces en France. Amna va vraiment bien en ce moment, ce serait un moment idéal pour voyager...

Pour rappel, le service humanitaire d'Air France prendra en charge le villet d'Amna.. nous devrons peut-être nous mobiliser pour les billets des parents (si les deux peuvent l'accompagner). Je suis en ce moment en train de mobiliser la communauté française de Banda Aceh: je vous tiens au courant!

Ce qui m'amène à une très belle et bonne nouvelle: Le lettre que Tommy (d'Ensemble) a fait parvenir à Jacque Chirac lors de la Journée sur la lutte contre le cancer à l'Elysée le 27 mars 2007. Voici en image Roland en train de donner la lettre de Tommy à Jacque CHIRAC ainsi que la lettre de Tommy . Croisons les doigts: je prépare en ce moment un rapport pour Mr Douste Blazy sur Amna et sur notre travail et ce dont nous avons besoin.

Le jour de Noel, nous sommes allés offrir l'album photo a Amna. Ellizardina (la maman) nou avais fait un 'repas de noel a l'indonesienne' et nous as meme offert des cadeaux (des gateaux)..Amna et sa famille etaient vraiment tres heureux de l'album, et aussi tres emus de voir toutes vos petites tetes et vos beaux sourire.. voici quelques photos...

GOOD NEWS AND NICE EVENING

Here are the news:

1. our french friends managed to collect for the 5th chemo 800 euros (=900 dollars) they are sending it soon, while Dori in the USA collected another 800 dollars: this is going to be plenty for Amna's fifth chemo that starts on the 15th of january.

2. Our french friends have contacted the head of the humanitarian department of Air France (plane company) so that they can get Amna and family in France for free. We are waiting for answers.

3. The french Associations of host families for people suffering from heart diseases have agreed to find a host family for amna and her parents if they come!!

4. OUR BIGGEST SUCCESS: France's most experienced and recognized doctor concerning transplants (a woman: Dr Karima Yakouben) has aggreed to take care of Amna!!!! She is now in contact directly withAmna's doctor in Penang, and we are waiting to see if Amna' s medical record is 'appropriate' for her coming to France.

5. We all know Putri's test might be negative, in what case nobody from Amna's family can be a donor.. But we have a friend in France that works for the French Registry of Bone Marrow Transplant and she has agreed to help us find a donor if needed!

Bonjour a tous,

Un petit message pour les dernieres nouvelles... Amna a une infection du foie, et nous avons du aujourd hui donner 10 millions Rp (environ 1 000 euros) a rizal pour des medicaments... la docteur, pensant qu ils n auraient pas les sous pour les medicaments, allait operer amna.. bref, nous payons pour les medicaments. Amna ne va pas tres bien et je lui envoie regulierement des textos lui disant qu on pense tous a elle... A bientot pour des nouvelles sur les resultats des tests .

A little message to let you know that unfortunately Amna has contracted a liver infection.. the doctor wanted to operate thinking the family did not have the money for the medication (1 000 dollars) but we were able to get it from our bank account. Amna is not doing so well but i regularly send her text messagges letting her know that we are all thinking of her.. I ll write soon regarding the test results that we should get soon.

Saturday cooking for the Junaedi..

Sachant qu'Ellizardina (la maman) est au côté d'Amna à Penang, et que les hommes indonésiens ne sont pas forcément de bons cuisiniers, nous avons décidé avec Abel et Erwin d'aller faire à manger pour Rizal et ses filles (hozna et latifa). Au menu, pâtes avec une sauce délicieuse à base de tomates, aubergine et carottes. Un plat "occidental" pour eux! Rizal me demande " et le riz"? hihi... bref, un beau moment de bonheur comme en témoigne ces photos.

Knowing that Ellizardina is with Amna in Penang, and that indonesian men are not great cooks, we (erwin abel and emily) decided to go to their house last saturday and cook for men. On the menu: past with a delicious sauce... they were quite horrified when they realized we wouldn't be eating rice..lol A beautiful moment as you can see on the pictures...

THE JUNAEDI IN PENANG FOR THE TESTS

Hello everyone,

In English: Amna is staying in Penang until her family goes there for the tests.She wasn't feeling well enough to come back to Banda Aceh.Rizal and the girls are going to Penang this saturday. The results of the compatibility tests will come three weeks later. For news, I am in contact with an Indian doctor working for WHO who is investigating the quality and price of an operatio in India. I have also wrote to a french NGO called "Aviation without borders" who take care of bringing sick children to countries where they can be helped. I will let you know when i get answers from all these people.

En français: Les nouvelles sont les suivantes: je suis en contact avec un médecin Indien qui travaille pour l'OMS et qui se renseigne pour nous sur la qualité/prix de l'opération en Inde. Privilégiant tout de meme l'option France, j'ai écrit à Aviation Sans Frontières et leur présentant le cas d'Amna. Je vous tiens au courant de la réponse.

My mother is organizing an "Indonesian diner", inviting all her friends to come and spend an evening eating indonesian food... All guests will pay 25 euros to come, and can make extra donations also. During the evening, take time to explain Amna's story, how the funding is organized and show pictures...I'm sure people will want to help!

Last chemo for Amna

Chers amis,

Amna commence sa dernière chimio demain, a moins que la greffe n'ai pas lieu et soit remplacée par une cinquième chimio...

J'ai vu Pak Rizal hier: il vient de revenir de Penang ou Amna suit actuellement sa quatrième chimio (divisée en deux sessions: la deuxieme commencant demain).

Amna était très très heureuse de recevoir le cadeau que nous lui avons offert de la part de tout le monde: un sac a dos en peluche, un petit pull, des bracelets, et un lettre de la part de tous. Elle m'a réécrit une lettre et m'a fait un dessin qui sera posté ici très bientôt...Amna revient à Banda Aceh le 9 novembre, et repart le 20.

Le 20, toute la famille part faire les tests de compatibilité à Penang. C'est un moment que nous attendons tous depuis longtemps et il nous reste à être patient et croiser les doigts. Nous aurons les résultats trois semaines plus tard.

Avec les dernières sommes recues, nous pouvons payer le voyage de la famille à Penang. Après, la caisse sera vide. L'idée est qu'une association prenne le relais.. Sinon, nous devrons être créatifs rapidement...

Dear friends,

Amna is starting her last chemo tomorrow, that is if she receives her bone marrow transplant. If not, she will be undergoing a fifth and last one...

I met with Pak Rizal yesterday: he has just come back from Penang where Amna is undergoing her fourth chemo. This one is divided in two sessions, and the second session starts tomorrow. Amna was very happy to receive a gift from all of us ( I bought her a teddybear bag, a little sweater, bracelets and wrote a letter on behalf of all of us). She wrote back to me and I will post an english version of her letter very soon. Amna will be coming back to Banda Aceh on the 9th of november until the 20th.

On the 20th of november the family will be going back to Penang to do the compatibility tests. This is something we have all been waiting for and we can only keep our fingers crossed now.. The results will come three weeks later...

With the latests money received, we will be able to fund the family's trip to Penang.. After that, I think we will have nothing left. This is not a problem is an organization takes it from there... But there might be last-minute actions we will need to do.

Here are some pictures of today's visit to the Junaedi's house. Amna came back from her chemo yesterday. She was doing really well. We discussed the evolution of everybody's action, and talked about the family's trip to Penang for the compatibility tests. The ideal would be for them to leave on october 29th or 30th. Amna has three sisters, Potri, Houzna and Latifa... they are all as beautiful as each other and Latifa, the baby of the family, was quite an act.. lol. The old lady on the photos is their maternal grand mother.

Voici quelques photos de notre visite d'aujourd'hui chez les Junaedi. Amna est rentree hier de sa chimiom et elle se porte vraiment bien. Nous avons discuter des actions menees par les uns et les autres, et egalement du voyage de la famille a Penang pour les tests de compatibilite. Ils veulent partir le 29 ou 30 octobre. Amna a trois soeurs: Potri, Houzna et Latifa.. Elles sont maginfiques et Latifa, la petite derniere, etait surexcitee.. La vieille dame sur les photos est la grand mere maternelle...

VISIT TO PENANG

We visited Amna in Pulau Penang Hospital in Penang, Malaysia on October 30th. It was amazing to finally meet her and her mother (we already knew Rizal, her father, quite well). I was nevertheless very frustrated not to be able to tell her in her own language all that was being done for her around the world.

Amna seemed ok, even though very fin and tired. We gave her a teddy bear: I remembered the importance of “the teddy bear” when my friend Adam had leukemia. Also, it’s well known that a teddy bear helps you to sleep, to not be afraid of the dark, to talk to… She was just thrilled.

The hospital was not as bad as we had expected it to be: for a public Malaysian hospital, it was actually pretty good. Nevertheless, not reaching the standards you can get back home. The Children’s department is a big room with dozens of beds lined up together: no intimacy for the children and their families. Also, children are not separated according to their illnesses. Nobody asked us to wash our hands before entering: you can actually enter and leave the room without being asked anything. The doors of the room are wide open.. a few meters from the street, the market, the pollution..

I was lucky to be able to meet Amna’s doctor, Doctor Yeuh. I told her that we were trying to financially help Amna’s family and that we also wanted to make sure her transplant would take place in a good hospital. Doctor Yeuh kindly took some time to explain to me several things:
Not being of Malaysian nationality, Amna’s medical expenses are entirely at charge of her family.
It is not possible for Amna to be transplanted in Penang, as no hospital or clinic actually do this kind of operation. She would need to go to Kuala Lumpur. Doctor Yeuh has already contacted the two public hospital in KL that do the transplants: Amna has been put on a waiting list. The reality is that she will never be operated in time. Which leaves us with the private hospital: but the cost of the transplant in one of those is just simply not affordable.
Amna’s sisters need to be tested for the transplant as soon as possible. The quicker the better.
If we had the financial possibility to put Amna back in the first hospital she was in (better standards), we would have to get a recommendation from Dr. Yeuh.

The Junaedis went back to Banda Aceh with Amna the next day. Amna had finished her chemo and wanted to go see her sisters. Although doctor Yeuh said there was a huge risk of infections, there was no possibility for the family to stay in Penang until the next chemo.
I visited them at their home in Banda Aceh a week later. Amna seemed ok, and she was very happy to be home with her sisters. Friends had come buy, and that seemed to give her strength.

Since then, Amna has been back to Penang for her fourth chemo, an dis coming back to Banda in a few days. I should be going and seeing her them.

VISITE A PENANG

Le 30 octobre dernier, nous rendions visite à Amna à l’hôpital Pulan Penang de Penang, en Malaisie. Amna a suivi toutes ses chimiothérapies sauf la première dans cet hôpital. C’était très émouvant de rencontrer Amna et sa maman (nous connaissions déjà bien Rizal, le papa). Frustrant aussi de ne pas pouvoir parler Indonésien et de leur raconter tout ce qui est en train d’être fait pour les aider.

Amna avait l’air en forme, bien que toute maigre et fatiguée. Nous lui avons offert un nounours tout doux : je me rappelle à quel point « le nounours » avait aidé mon ami Adam (atteint d’une leucémie lorsqu’il avait douze ans). Les nounours ça aident à s’endormir le soir dans l’hôpital, à ne plus avoir peur du noir et à se confier aussi : c’est bien connu !
L’hôpital n’était pas un hôpital de cambrousse : pour un hôpital public malaisien, c’était tout à fait correct. Cependant, le niveau de confort est bien différent que celui de nos hôpitaux en France. Le service enfants est une grande salle avec des lits les uns à côté des autres : jamais d’intimité pour les enfants et leurs famille. Aussi, la non séparation des enfants par rapport à leur maladie est aussi inquiétante. On ne nous a pas demandé de laver nos mains avant de rentrer. Les portes du service sont constamment grande ouverte et donne sur la rue, le marché, la pollution : la ville. On rentre et sort du service sans problème.

J’ai eu la chance de pouvoir rencontrer la docteur d’Amna, docteur Yeuh. Je lui ai expliqué que nous essayons d’aider financièrement la famille et de nous occuper de la greffe. Elle m’a expliqué plusieurs choses :
N’étant pas de nationalité malaisienne, les frais hospitaliers sont entièrement à charge de la famille.
Il n’est pas possible d’opérer Amna (greffe) à Penang. Aucun hôpitaux ne faisant l’opération. Elle doit être opérée à Kuala Lumpur, dans un autre hôpital public malaysien. Docteur Yeuh a déjà contacté les hôpitaux et mis Amna sur la liste d’attente. Cependant, la liste d’attente est tellement longue qu’Amna ne serait de toute façon pas opérée à temps. Reste l’option clinique privée à Kuala Lumpur : le prix de cette opération est totalement inaccessible.
Les tests de compatibilité avec les sœurs d’Amna doivent être fait au plus vite.
Par rapport à la possibilité de ramener Amna à la première clinique où elle a été diagnostiquée et où les chimios coûtent plus chères si nous trouvions les fonds : ce transfert ne serait pas facile dans la mesure où si l’on quitte la clinique il est dur d’y retourner. Cela ne serait possible qu’avec la recommandation du Docteur Yeu.

Les Junaedi sont rentrés à Banda Aceh le lendemain de notre rencontrer. Amna rentre chez elle entre ses chimios. Cela signifie une journée de transport aérien (Penang-Medan / Medan-Banda Aceh), et ensuite une semaine chez elle à Banda. Le risque d’infections est très élevé et Amna ne doit pas sortir de chez elle. Cependant, je l’ai revu la semaine d’après notre rencontre à Penang. Elle était tellement heureuse d’être chez elle, avec ses sœurs, ses amis que je me suis dit que cela devait l’aider psychologiquement.

Depuis, Amna est retourné à Penang faire une quatrième chimio (le 6 octobre) : je la revois ce samedi 14 octobre.

HISTORY OF SICKNESS

June 24, 2006: Amna felt her first fever that lasted a week: her parents gave her fever medicine thinking it was just a regular fever.

First week in July: the fever worsened and Amna felt pains in her leg bone, and bled from her nose and gums.

July5, 2006: her parents brought Amna to the hospital, and the doctor diagnosed rheumatism fever. After 2 days the fever cooled down. Nevertheless, the doctor asked for hospitalization.

8 July 2006: at 3am Amna felt pain in her leg bone, and fell in a state of shock and intense pain. She was also bleeding very much from her mouth and nose: her parents brought her to Zainol Abidin hospital (Banda Aceh) to be hospitalized.

8 – 19 July 2006: during her eleven-days stay in the hospital, Amna received a transfusion of 5 bags of blood (1.250 cc) after her hemoglobin fell down to 5,5. The doctor continued to believe she was suffering from rheumatism fever.

19 July 2006: Feeling better, Amna left the hospital.

28th of July: Amna is brought back to the hospital by her parents after another crisis. At that point the doctor takes into account the possibility of her diagnoses being leukemia and says she must be hospitalized. In the hospital her hemoglobin goes down until 9,2 and she receives again a blood transfusion of 2 bags (500 cc): the doctor diagnoses Anemia Aplasthic.

28 July – 3 August: nothing changes and no response is given to her condition: they just don’t know why is she sick. The parents decide to bring her to a hospital in Penang, Malaysia.

August 4, 2006: Amna and her parents check in at the Gleneagles Medical Center of Penang and are directly in hand of doctor Leong Kim Wah, specialized doctor for leukemia in Gleneagles hospital Penang.

August 8: Doctor Kim Wah diagnoses leukemia type AML.

After consultation with doctor Leong Kim Wah, they are told her illness is at a level of 70% (30% recovery).

Because the cost in Gleneagles hospital is too expensive, and having received advise from family friends, Amna’s parents transfer her to Pulau Penang hospital, where she is seen by leukemia specialist Dr. Yeuh.

Dr. Yeuh explains the step by step process of leukemia AML medicinal treatment. The first phase is to take 6 months and includes chemo and antibiotic medicinal treatment as many as 6 times. Amna’s first chemo starts on the 15th of August: she receives 1 bag of blood (200 cc) by the end on the 24th of August. After consultation with Dr.Yeuh they are told her illness is at a level of 40-50%. She receives another transfusion of blood again on the 29th of August and starts her second chemo on the 13th of September 2006.

Amna's third chemo started on october 6.

HISTORIQUE DE LA MALADIE D’AMNA

24 juin 2006: Première fièvre pendant une semaine : les parents d’Amna lui donne des médicaments contre la fièvre pensant que cela allait passer.

Première semaine de juillet: la fièvre empire et Amena commence à avoir mal aux os des jambes. Elle commence également à saigner du nez et des gencives.

5 Juillet 2006: Ses parents amènent Amna aux urgences à Banda Aceh, et le docteur diagnostique des fièvres de rhumatismes. Amna est hospitalisée pour une courte durée.

8 Juillet 2006:A trois heures du matin les douleurs dans les jambes reviennent et Amna se remet à saigner en quantité importante du nez et des gencives. Amna tombe en état de choc et ses parents la ramènent aux urgences à l’hôpital Zainol Abidin (Banda Aceh). Elle est à nouveau hospitalisée.

8 – 19 Juillet 2006: Amna reste onze jours à l’hôpital, recevant cinq transfusions sanguines. Malgré tout, son hémoglobine tombe à 5,5. Les docteurs continuent de croire qu’elle souffre de rhumatismes aigus. Se sentant mieux, Amna quitte l’hôpital le 19 juillet.

28 Juillet: Après une nouvelle crise, Amna est ramenée par ses parents à l’hôpital. Les docteurs prennent en compte pour la première fois la possibilité d’une leucémie, et la garde à l’hôpital. Son hémoglobine tombe à 9,2 et elle reçoit deux transfusions sanguines. Le docteur diagnostique une Anémie Aplasique.

28 Juillet – 3 Août: Devant l’incapacité des docteurs de Banda Aceh de définitivement diagnostiquer Amna, ses parents décident de l’amener à Penang, en Malaisie, où se trouvent plusieurs très bons hôpitaux privés.

4 Août, 2006: Amna est hospitalisée à Gleneagles Medical Center de Penang (hôpital privé) et est soignée par le docteur Leong Kim Wah, spécialiste reconnu de la leucémie enfantine.

8 Août: Le docteur Kim Wah diagnostique une leucémie de type AML (Acute Mylogenous). Il indique que la maladie en est à 70% de son intensité.

À cause du coût et la durée des soins, et les parents d’Amna ayant déjà épuisé leurs économies, Amna est transférée à l’hôpital Public de Penang, Pulau Penang Hospital. Elle y est suivie par Dr. Yeuh. Dr Yeuh explique à la famille le processus de traitement : la première phase prendra six mois et inclut plusieurs chimiothérapies et des traitements antibiotiques. La deuxième phase consiste en trouver un donneur pour une greffe de moelle osseuse.

15 Août : Amna entame sa première chimiothérapie et reçoit plusieurs transfusions sanguines. Dr.Yeuh indique que la maladie est descendue à 50% de son intensité.

Amna entame sa deuxième chimiothérapie le 29 aout et la troisieme mi-septembre.
6 octobre: Amna entame sa quatrieme chimio, payee grace aux dons que nous avons recoltes sur Paris.
